We left Northgate almost two months ago now. The in-house property management team from Michael Nelson Properties really put the squeeze on all the tenants since taking charge from Gibraltar. This took the form of horrendous and unusually punitive late fees (instant $100+ fees and a Three Day Notice if one was one day late, no matter how good one's tenant history), and a $40/person utility charge. This would mean a hike in overall costs from $725 to $885 per month. We knew we could do better, and we were sick of dealing with a property management team who treated all tenants like deadbeat scumbags and didn't even bother to maintain the property.
Now we live on the 2nd floor of a four-plex in Columbia City, overlooking a great park and right across from the local Seattle Public Library branch. Our rent is about $80 a month more than we would have been paying, had we stayed in Northgate, for a place that's 50% bigger and in a kickass location. We are three blocks from the nearest light rail station, which I take to work every weekday. We have 3 coffee shops, a bakery (also does great coffee), a butcher, a first-run cinema with A/C, a great used bookstore, a post office, a non-profit bike shop, and an ice cream shop / '80s arcade all within 5 blocks of our place. What's not to like? Well, if you must ask, the boom cars and blaring cop cars up and down Rainier do get a little tiring...
So, my aim here is to close up the two-year Northgate saga with a look back at what made the time there tolerable, a kind of Thank You note to all the great stuff tucked away up yonder.
Thank you, Brown Bear Car Wash: without you, we would have had to go to much greater lengths to get quarters for the washer and dryer that churned away behind a sliding door that many forgot to close, 10 feet from our front door.
Thank you, Seven Eleven: that Vcom machine saved our bacon a couple of times when we needed to get cash (remember, BECU members can withdraw without a fee from those things) or a money order.
Thank you, Safeway: although I think you are generally trashy and mediocre, you have some friendly peeps working for you, and at least I could get grapefruit juice and Cozy Shack pudding there.
Thank you, Burrito Express and Square Meal: the former had excellent burritos and the latter (though we learned there was corn contamination by trial-and-error) makes very tasty full meals for a really decent price.
Thank you, Amante Pizza & Pasta: we weren't neighbors for very long, but that 4-cheese extra large could stuff the 4 of us for a reasonable amount.
Thank you, Seattle Parks & Recreation: the little park on 14th is really nice when you consider how much City of Seattle seems to want to forget that the area north of 85th to Shoreline even exists.
Thank you, Aroma City: you are the little coffee shop that doesn't quit. They were broken into and cleaned out like three times over last Christmas and New Year's and still kept at it. Oh, and Sarah's a little hottie...
and just a bit farther afield,
Thank you, QFC: what would I have done for bus passes (before Classmates moved to Seattle, I had to buy my own monthly pass), bank deposits (Alaska is part of the NWCU network...), and Mukilteo Mudd ice cream?
Thank you, Countryside Donut: The guy who owns this place was unfailingly polite and professional, and it's not like a donut place has to do that. They had the huge, crispy apple fritters (insert some Homer Simpson addict sound here)...
Thank you, Northgate Branch of the Seattle Public Library: you are a low-budget bandaid, but your people are dedicated to making you more. I was particularly grateful for the generous magazine rack and the quiet study rooms, especially when I was still self-employed.
and finally,
Thank you, Northgate Mall: or perhaps better put: thank you various retailers in Northgate Mall. Chipotle, Barnes & Noble, Panera, E-Bar, and, Red Robin (ever heard of noise dampening?), Kidd Valley (RIP) were all very useful, and had their place in making Northgate halfway liveable, if not quite enjoyable.
This will be the last post. Don't rent from Michael Nelson Properties - you have been warned!
